iacst-2022

In this chapter, we will study about reproduction in animals. We will read about the different modes of reproduction in different animals. We will focus on the sexual mode of reproduction in animals in this chapter. We will study about the male and female reproductive organs with the help of diagrams. We will read about the process of fertilisation and also the different types of fertilisation. The chapter would conclude with a brief passage about asexual fertilisation.

  • There are two modes of reproduction – sexual and asexual.
  • The fusion of male and female gametes is called sexual reproduction.
  • The male gametes produced by the testes are called sperms.
  • The female gametes produced by the ovaries are called ova.
  • In this chapter, we read about the fusion of sperms and ova, which is called fertilisation.
  • The developing structure from this fusion is called an embryo.
  • It goes on to explain the whole process from fertilisation to the birth of a baby.
  • The stage of the embryo in which all body parts are distinguishable is called the foetus.
  • The chapter also tells us about internal and external fertilisation in different animals.
  • We also learn the difference between viviparous and oviparous animals.
  • The chapter also illustrates the life cycle of different animals.
  • The life cycle of a frog, as an example, has been explained through a diagram in the chapter.
  • We also learn about the concept of metamorphosis, i.e., the transformation of a larva into an adult.
  • The chapter ends by telling us about asexual reproduction in organisms like hydra and amoeba.
