NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Science Chapter 15: Some Natural Phenomena

The chapter begins with an introduction to lighting and sparks. Consequently, we read about charged objects and the methods through which we can charge them. We will also study about the different types of charges and their interaction. We also learn about the transfer of these charges. The chapter also tells us about how lightning is caused. We also study about safety precautions to take during lightning. The chapter concludes by teaching us about earthquakes. We learn about the causes behind earthquakes and also about safety precautions during an earthquake.

  • Accumulation of charges in the clouds causes lightning.
  • We study about how ancient Greeks came to know about sparks as early as 600 B.C.
  • Rubbing two materials together can also create a charge.
  • For example, rubbing a comb on dry hair can make the comb a charged object.
  • Charges can be negative or positive.
  • Various experiments in the chapter show how positive or negative charges can be attained.
  • Electroscopes are used to determine whether an object carries a charge or not.
  • Various experiments in the chapter also show how these charges can be transferred from one object to another.
  • The chapter goes on to explain the whole process of how lightning is created in the clouds.
  • The do’s and don’ts during lightning are also explained in the chapter.
  • We also study about earthquakes and how they can be predicted.
  • An earthquake is a sudden shaking or trembling of the earth which lasts for a very short period of time.
  • We learn about the causes of earthquakes like the shifting of tectonic plates.
  • The magnitude of an earthquake is measured on a Richter scale.
  • The chapter concludes by telling us about the dos and don’ts during an earthquake.
