NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Science Chapter 14: Chemical Effects of Electric Current

In this chapter, we will study about the various chemical effects of electric current. The chapter begins with examples and experiments to determine whether liquids can conduct electricity. The chapter goes on to test the chemical effects of electric current through experiments involving electrodes. The chapter concludes by telling us about electroplating and its application in our everyday lives and also in various industries.

  • In this chapter, we learn that some liquids are good conductors of electricity and other liquids are bad conductors of electricity.
  • Solutions of acids, bases, and salts are good conductors of electricity.
  • The passage of an electric current passing through a liquid causes chemical reactions.
  • The resulting effects of this process are called chemical effects of electric currents.
  • The most elaborate experiment given to show this phenomenon is the experiment with two carbon rods and electrodes.
  • The experiment shows the formation of oxygen and hydrogen bubbles on the electrodes' positive and negative terminals, respectively.
  • This is achieved when the current is passed through the rods.
  • Depositing one layer of material on another material with the help of electricity is called electroplating.
  • Electroplating is widely used in industries.
  • It is also used in applying a layer of gold and silver on less valuable metals.
  • In particular, we learn about electroplating in chromium, tin cans, and iron.
  • However, electroplating also creates a lot of environmental pollution
  • Strict guidelines apply to control the harm caused by electroplating.
