The CUTN was established in 2009 through an Act of Parliament, aiming to empower students from marginalised communities. The university began its journey at the Collectorate Annexe in Thiruvarur, 60 kilometres east of Thanjavur, with just eight students enrolled in M.A. English Studies. At present, the institute stands by a tributary of the Cauvery River, a mere seven kilometres northwest of Thiruvarur, with its 13 Schools, 28 dynamic Departments that foster a diverse and enriching learning environment.
NAAC-accredited CUTN with an ‘A+’ Grade. As for 2024, CU Tamil Nadu fell 10 ranks to the previous 99th rank in the 'University' category by the NIRF ranking.

Chozha Central Library: The Central Library is an open educational resource automated through ILMS, using Koha open-source software. Thus, the library housekeeping is enhanced with operations like cataloguing, serial control, circulation, etc. The library’s online catalogue allows one to search for books, e-books, CDs/DVDs, etc.
Sports: The university promotes excellence in South-Zone Inter-University Tournaments and National competitive events. The multi-sports complex comprises two Volleyball Courts, two Basketball courts, one court for Lawn Tennis, and a 400m Athletic Standard track. Moreover, there is a gym facility in the university used by students and faculty members under the guidance of an expert.
