The University provides education through its 84 Departments and 19 Schools, catering to different streams of education including Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Commerce, Management, and Medicine. The University of Madras provides a variety of courses at UG, PG and PhD levels. Madras University admission is either entrance-based or merit-based. For Madras University admission to MBA, the University accepts the TANCET entrance exam. In addition to TANCET, the university accepts various national-level entrance exams like NATA, among others, for admission to BArch.

The University of Madras NIRF 2025 report uncovers important placement figures. Of the 1,298 students pursuing two-year postgraduate courses like MBA and M.Tech, 483 students got placed successfully. In the three-year postgraduate courses, 7 students out of 24 got placed. Interestingly, the number of students who got placed in 2024 was one-third of the number placed in 2023, reflecting a huge 66.66% dip compared to the previous year.

Scholarships & Financial Aid at University of Madras 

University of Madras provides a total of 28 scholarship schemes to the students of its affiliated colleges. They are the Mother M. Celine Scholarship, Sir Tanjore Madhava Rau Scholarship, Lord Pentland Mussalman Scholarship, Poet H.A. Krishna Pillai Tamil Scholarship, Madras Oriental Conference Scholarship, Dr A. L. Mudaliar Scholarship, Krupabai Santhyanathan Memorial Scholarship, Lions Club of Madras Central Endowment Scholarship, The Goschen Memorial Endowment Scholarship, and The Johnston of Carnslloch Endowment Scholarship. UNOM students can only access these scholarship programs if they meet the required eligibility conditions established by the university.

• Financial support scholarship eligibility depends on family income not exceeding INR 200,000 per annum. Merit scholarships are available for students with exemplary academic performance, including a merit fellowship of around INR 3,500 per semester for top scorers.
• PhD stipends of INR 37,000-42,000 per month are available through the DST-FIST program.

Campus Life, Infrastructure & Facilities at University of Madras 

• Hostels - Hostels of the University of Madras are on all four campuses, namely Chepauk, Guindy, Marina, and Taramani. There is a hostel facility for worthy and needy students on a shared basis in each of the campuses. There are 7 hostels in total to provide accommodation for the students with all the basic amenities.
• Library - There are four campus libraries of the University of Madras: the Madras University Library, Guindy Campus Library, Taramani Campus Library, and Marina Campus Library. The university's central library is over 70,000 square feet in area. It contains five stack rooms, a main reading hall, a periodical reading hall, a circulation desk, and an e-resource centre.
• Sports grounds - The centre provides various facilities such as a pavilion, sports track, athletic track, volleyball court, basketball court, badminton court, and two tennis courts. The students of the University take part in more than 30 South Zone and All India Inter-University sports meets every year.
