About ISI Kolkata: Overview

Functioning under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation of the Government of India, the Indian Statistical Institute was founded on 17 December 1931 in Kolkata. Providing higher education programs across disciplines such as statistics, mathematics and information science, the Government of India has granted ISI the INI Status under the Indian Statistical Institute Act, 1959.

The public research university has its main campus in Kolkata, spanning over 30 acres, stretching across six address blocks with segregated office and residential complexes. Other ISI campuses are in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Tezpur.

The admission process at ISI Kolkata is largely an online one, with an online application procedure, an entrance exam cut-off clearance and a counselling or in-person interview.

  • How to apply: Application to ISI Kolkata is done online by visiting the ISI Admission Portal. There, the candidates are required to register themselves and upload the digital copies of their photographs and signatures. Afterwards, the candidates apply for the desired programs by filling out the application forms and attaching all the relevant documents. Reserved category students are required to upload Caste certificates and/or Disability Certificate. Then, the candidates pay the required application fees and proceed accordingly.
  • Entrance exams accepted: ISI Kolkata conducts its written examination for entry into various programs offered. Apart from the ISI Test, GATE scores are accepted for some PG programs. For Doctorate programs, UGC NET scores are accepted as well.

Campus Life, Infrastructure and Facilities at ISI Kolkata

Spread across 30 acres, the ISI Kolkata campus is divided into two approximately equal parts - the office complex and the residential complex - separated by Girish Chand Ghosh Street. Both of the complexes are segregated, and the office complex contains all the necessary buildings dedicated to different disciplines. The following are highlights of the campus amenities: 

  • Hostels: The Senior Boys’ Hostel, completed construction in 1989, provides single rooms with attached baths and all the necessary furnishings and fittings. There are also common facilities such as a TV and indoor game facilities available inside the hostel premises.
  • Library: The Central Library is located inside the ISI Campus, contains over 2,00,000 volumes of books and journals, besides many official reports, reprints, maps, microfilms and microfiches. Additionally, there are digital resources available to the students.
  • Canteen and Mess: The hostel mess is managed by private tenders and maintains all the necessary hygiene and safety standards.
  • Guest House facility: The three-storied building has six suites, six double bedrooms and twenty-three single bedrooms. These rooms can be booked by the parents, with different price slabs available for different types of rooms.
