A brief on the nuts and bolts of monomials, binomials, and polynomials are also given in the chapter. Students become familiar with the addition, subtraction, and multiplication of Algebraic Expression. The idea of Identity is additionally shrouded in this chapter. The five exercises present in the chapter cover all of the concepts in Algebraic Expressions and Identities.

Algebraic Expressions
Algebraic expressions are mathematical expressions consisting of variables and constants along with mathematical operators.

Terms
Terms are the sole building blocks of expressions. Their sums add up to form expressions.

Factors
Factors are those variables or constants, whose product forms a term of an expression.

Coefficients
Coefficients of certain terms are the numerical factors of the mentioned terms.

Like Terms
Like terms are those certain terms that have the same variables raised to the same power

Monomial
Monomial is known as the expression with only one term.

Binomial
Binomial is an expression which contains two, unlike terms.

Polynomial
Polynomials are certain expressions that have more than two terms with non-zero coefficients and variables having non-negative integral exponents.

Algebraic Identities

  • (a+b)2 = a2+2ab+b2
  • (a−b)2 = a2−2ab+b2
  • (a+b)(a−b) = a2−b2

 

Addition and Subtraction of Algebraic Expressions
When adding or subtracting two algebraic expressions, we can only add or subtract similar terms. The sum of two or more similar terms is a like term, with a numerical coefficient equal to the sum of all the like terms' numerical coefficient.

Multiplication of Monomials

  • The terms’ numerical coefficient is calculated by the product of the numerical coefficient of the two terms.
  • Exponent or power of each algebraic factor is calculated by the algebraic sum of the algebraic factor's exponents in both the monomials.

 

Distributive Property of Multiplication
The distributive property is an algebraic property used to multiply single values and two or more values within a parenthesis set.

Multiplication of any Polynomial
If we multiply any two polynomials, we multiply all the terms or monomials of one polynomial with all the other polynomial terms.
