Trigonometry was developed due to the requirement in astronomy. The knowledge of trigonometry helps to construct maps, evaluate the position of latitudes and longitudes. According to mathematics, i.e., given in Maths Chapter 9 Applications of Trigonometry, Trigonometry is the science of the relationship between the sides and angles of a right-angled triangle or simply means the calculations with triangles. Ratios of sides of a right triangle are called trigonometric ratios. Trigonometric ratios are used to find the height and distance of the object. Consider triangle ABC right-angled at B. These ratios are defined with acute angle A or angle C. If one of the trigonometric angles are known, the remaining trigonometric ratios of an angle is determined. The height or the length of an object or distance between two distinct objects are determined with the help of trigonometric ratios.
The NCERT Maths Chapter 9 Applications of trigonometry further explains its individual applications as follows:
Line of sight: When an observer looks from a point E(eye) at an object O, the straight line EO between the eye E and the object O is known as the line of sight.
Horizontal line: When an observer looks from a point E(eye) to another point, Q is horizontal to E, then the straight line, EQ is the horizontal line.
The angle of elevation: When the eye is below the object, then the observer has to look up from point E to object O. This rotation of measurement from the horizontal line is called the angle of elevation.
The angle of depression: When the eye is above the object, then the observer has to look down from E to the object. Now, the horizontal line is parallel to the ground. This rotation of measurement from the horizontal line is known as the angle of depression.
