NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Maths Chapter 10: The chapter is about understanding the relationship between circles and line. Maths Chapter 10 Circles deals with tangents to a circle, a theorem of the relationship between a tangent and the radius of the circle and the number of tangents from a point on a circle.

A circle is a collection of all points in a plane at a constant distance from a fixed point. This fixed point is called the centre. The constant distance from this centre is called the radius. A line segment joining any two points on a circle is called chord. The chord passing through the centre of the circle is called the diameter. The diameter is the longest chord.

The relationship between a circle and a line:

1. When a line and a circle have no common point is called a non-intersecting line.
2. When a line meets the circles at one point, this line of the point is known as a tangent. There can be infinite tangents to a circle.
3. When a line intersects a circle, there are two common points, and the line is known as Secant.

Maths Chapter 10 Circles further discusses the properties of a tangent to circle that includes:

  • The tangent to a circle is perpendicular to the radius passing through the point of contact.
  • A line drawn through the endpoint of a radius and perpendicular to it is the tangent to the circle.
  • The lengths of two tangents from an external point to a circle are equal.

The common point of the tangent and the circle is called the point of contact. The length of the segment of the tangent from the external point and the point of contact is called the length of the tangent. The tangents cannot be drawn from any inside points of the circle and could be only one tangent at one point of contact.
