Having learnt the concepts of natural numbers, number line, whole number and properties of whole numbers in this chapter students are introduced to the concept of integers. When whole numbers and negative numbers are taken together into account, this collection of numbers is known as Integers. So, – 1, – 2, – 3, – 4, ... called negative numbers are negative integers, and 1, 2, 3, 4, ... called positive numbers are the positive integers. Number line that was introduced in the chapter of whole numbers finds its utility in this chapter where the number line is used to place the integers and understand the operation of integers. It is important to understand the meaning and the difference between whole numbers and integers for a better understanding of their use in word problems and other complex concepts.
