NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Maths Chapter 5: Understanding Elementary Shapes

This chapter introduces the students to the concepts of Elementary Shapes. Having discussed the topic of Basic Geometrical Ideas, now students are being introduced to the devices and tools that are required to measure the shapes one sees around. All the shapes we see around us are formed using curves or lines. A graduated ruler and the divider are useful to compare lengths of line segments. Polygons, as a new concept, find its mention in this chapter. Triangle and triangle’s various shapes based on the length of their sides and different angles, quadrilateral and different types of a quadrilateral are some of the critical elementary shapes which students of class 6 must be aware of.

Further three dimensional shapes such as cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders, cones, prisms and pyramids are also introduced to the students of class 6. The topics covered such as parallelogram as a special type of a quadrilateral, in this chapter lay the ground for a better understanding of mensuration. Many of these topics will be revisited in the future classes and many lay base for the chapters which will be taught in higher classes. This chapter deals with the following concepts:

  • Angle
  • Revolution
  • Acute angle, obtuse angle and Reflex angle
  • Perpendicular and perpendicular bisector
  • Triangles and their different types
  • Polygons and their different types
  • Quadrilaterals and their properties
  • Parallelogram as a special type of quadrilateral.
