JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 2024

JEE Advanced 2024 Eligibility Criteria Update

IIT Madras has unveiled the JEE Advanced 2024 eligibility criteria for Indian nationals, OCI/PIO candidates, and foreign nationals. A crucial modification for OCI/PIO candidates has been introduced this year, significantly impacting IIT admissions. The details of this change are elaborated below.

The top 2.5 lakh candidates qualifying in JEE Main 2024 will be eligible to register for JEE Advanced 2024. In this discussion, we will delve into the detailed eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2024.

New JEE Advanced 2024 Eligibility Criteria for OCI/PIO Candidates:

OCI/PIO cardholders securing OCI/PIO cards before 04.03.2021 are considered Indian nationals for seat allocation in IITs. However, those who obtain OCI/PIO cards on or after 04.03.2021 will be categorized as foreign nationals. It's essential to note that these candidates are ineligible for any reservation benefits (such as GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) except for OPEN-PwD. To appear for JEE (Advanced) 2024, OCI/PIO candidates must feature in the Open and Open-PwD rank lists in JEE (Main) 2024.

During seat allocation, OCI/PIO candidates securing OCI/PIO cards before 04.03.2021 will be considered for seats in the OPEN category. They will be included in the Common Rank List and/or CRL-PwD list, as well as the Female Supernumerary seats, if applicable, contingent upon qualifying in JEE (Advanced) 2024. However, these OCI/PIO candidates are not entitled to reservation benefits under the GEN-EWS, OBC (NCL), SC, or ST categories for seat allocation.

JEE Advanced 2024 Eligibility Criteria for Indian Nationals

The standard eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced, applicable annually, are outlined as follows:

1. JEE Main Scores:

  • Candidates must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (across all categories) in the BE/BTech Paper of JEE (Main) 2024.

2. Age:

  • Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1999. SC, ST, and PwD candidates are granted a five-year age relaxation, requiring them to be born on or after October 1, 1994.

3. Number of JEE Advanced Attempts:

  • Candidates can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

4. Appearance Year of Class 12/Qualifying Exam:

  • Candidates must have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2023 or 2024, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Those who appeared in 2022 or earlier are ineligible.

5. Earlier Admission to IITs:

  • Candidates should not have been previously admitted to an IIT. Those whose admission to IITs was canceled, even after joining, are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2024.

Eligibility for Foreign Nationals in JEE Advanced 2024

  • Definition of Foreign Nationals:

    • Candidates who are not citizens of India (by birth or naturalized) are considered foreign nationals. (OCI/PIO candidates with OCI/PIO cards secured on or after 04.03.2021 are not included.)
  • Age Limit:

    • Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1999. Relaxation is provided in countries where armed forces service is mandatory.
  • Number of JEE Advanced Attempts:

    • Foreign nationals can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in consecutive years.
  • Appearance Year of Class 12/Qualifying Exam:

    • Candidates should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2023 or 2024 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. A minimum of 75% aggregate marks is required.
  • Earlier Admission to IITs:

    • Foreign nationals should not have been admitted to an IIT previously, and those whose admission was canceled after joining are ineligible for JEE Advanced 2024.

These criteria provide a comprehensive overview of the eligibility requirements for both Indian nationals and foreign nationals participating in JEE Advanced 2024.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria for 12th Standard Marks

To secure admissions into the esteemed IITs, candidates must adhere to the JEE Advanced 2024 eligibility criteria. Additionally, understanding the JEE Advanced eligibility marks is crucial for aspirants, allowing them to determine the required performance in the Class 12 examination.

  • 12th Percentage Requirements:

    • General and OBC candidates need to attain a minimum of 75% in the Class 12 exam.
    • SC/ST candidates must secure a 65% minimum in the Class 12 exam.
  • Top 20 Category Percentile:

    • Candidates should fall within the top 20 percentile of their qualifying examination.
  • Subjects Considered for Aggregate Marks:

    • Aggregate marks calculation should include scores from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Language, and one additional subject.
  • Total Marks Calculation Process for the 12th Examination:

    • If subject marks are not out of 100, they will be scaled to ensure the total aggregate marks are out of 500.
    • Boards using letter grades without equivalent percentage information must provide a certificate specifying equivalent marks.
    • If any of the subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Language) is not evaluated in the final year, marks from the previous year/s will be used for aggregate percentage calculation.
  • Best of Two Performances:

    • Candidates appearing in the 12th standard board examination in 2023 and reappearing in all subjects in 2024 will have their best performance considered.
  • Board-Specific Criteria:

    • Marks from only the 12th standard will be considered if a Board provides aggregate marks for both the 11th and 12th standard.
    • For Boards considering results of a 3-year diploma or equivalent courses, only final year marks will be considered.
    • Semester-based Boards will consider marks from the final two semesters.
  • Boards with Aggregate Marks Only:

    • If a Board does not release marks for individual subjects, only the aggregate marks provided by the Board will be considered.

Understanding these criteria ensures that candidates are well-informed about the necessary performance benchmarks in their Class 12 examinations for successful JEE Advanced 2024 eligibility.

Factors Influencing JEE Advanced Cutoff Determination

The cutoff for JEE Advanced is influenced by several factors that collectively shape the qualifying benchmarks. Here are the key determinants:

  1. Previous Year’s Cutoff Trends:

    • Historical data of previous years' cutoffs plays a pivotal role in establishing the benchmark for the current year.
  2. Total Number of Applicants:

    • The overall number of candidates applying for JEE Advanced contributes to the determination of the cutoff.
  3. Difficulty Level of the Exam:

    • The complexity of the JEE Advanced exam directly affects the cutoff. A more challenging exam tends to have a higher cutoff.
  4. Candidates’ Performance in JEE Advanced 2023:

    • The collective performance of candidates in the JEE Advanced exam of the previous year influences the cutoff for the current year.
  5. Number of Seats Available:

    • The availability of seats for admission in various IITs is a crucial factor in determining the cutoff.

Eligibility Criteria for JEE Advanced 2024 Cutoff:

For the categorization of cutoff marks in JEE Advanced 2024, the following eligibility criteria are considered:

  • Top 20 Percentile Calculation:

    • Category-wise cutoff marks are determined based on the performance of candidates who pass their respective boards in a specific year.
  • PwD Candidates’ Cutoff:

    • The cutoff marks for PwD candidates align with the lowest of the cutoff marks for other categories.
  • Top 20 Percentile Cutoff for Academic Years:

    • The top 20 percentile cutoff for the academic year 2024 applies to candidates who passed the 12th standard (or equivalent) examination in the same year. Similarly, the cutoff of 2023 is considered for candidates qualifying in the academic year 2023.
  • Reappearing Candidates:

    • Candidates appearing for the first time in 2023 and reattempting in 2024 for top 20 percentile cutoff must reattempt all subjects. The cutoff of 2023 is applicable to such candidates.
  • Board Information and Certification:

    • In cases where a Board doesn’t provide top 20 percentile cutoff information, candidates need to present a certificate from the respective board confirming their inclusion in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates.

Relaxation in JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 2024

For candidates seeking relaxation in JEE Advanced eligibility criteria for the year 2024, specific considerations apply:

  1. Registration in JEE Advanced 2023:

    • Candidates who registered for JEE Advanced 2023 but were absent in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are eligible for JEE Advanced 2024 without the necessity to fulfill eligibility criteria 1 to 4. However, successful registration on the online portal and payment of the registration fee are mandatory.
  2. Criterion 5: Earlier Admissions at IITs:

    • Candidates previously admitted to an IIT through JoSAA 2023 are ineligible for JEE Advanced 2024, regardless of program continuation. Those who accepted an IIT seat by reporting at a center previously are also deemed ineligible. Additionally, candidates whose IIT admissions were canceled post-joining are excluded from eligibility.

    • Exceptions:

      • Candidates enrolled in a preparatory course in any IIT for the first time in 2023 are eligible for JEE Advanced 2024.
      • Candidates who paid the seat acceptance fee in JoSAA 2023 are eligible if they meet the following conditions:
        • Did not report at any reporting centers OR
        • Withdrew before the last round of seat allotment OR
        • Had their seat canceled (for any reason) before the final round of seat allotment.
