We will learn about the mountains and how they are formed. We will also read about plateaus, their formations and their characteristics. The chapter also tells us about plains and the lives of people in the plains. The major points that should be kept in mind from the chapter include the following:

  • The surface of the earth keeps on changing. This happens due to internal and external processes.
  • This constant shifting of the earth's surface gives rise to different landforms.
  • Natural elevation of the earth's surface forms mountains.
  • Mountains with permanently frozen rivers of ice are known as glaciers.
  • The chapter goes on to explain different types of mountains and their characteristics.
  • An elevated flat-topped tableland is called a plateau.
  • The Deccan plateau is among the oldest plateaus all over the world. It is located in central India.
  • We learn about various features of plateaus and their formation too.
  • Large stretches of flat land are called plains. Rivers and their tributaries from flow through these plains towards the seas.
  • We also learn about their features and some of the oldest plains in the world in this chapter.
  • The chapter concludes by telling us about the life of people living in different landforms.
  • We see how the special characteristics of different landforms shape the work and daily life of the people.
  • Natural calamities also affect life in different landforms differently. For example, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are likely to cause more damage in the mountains than in plains.
