About IIIT Bhagalpur

IIIT Bhagalpur began academic operations in August 2017 as a joint venture involving the Government of India, the Government of Bihar and BELTRON.

IIIT Bhagalpur currently offers four B.Tech programmes: Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, and Mechatronics and Automation.

At the postgraduate level, the institute offers distinct M.Tech specialisations in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, VLSI and Embedded Systems, and Electric Vehicle Technology. Its academic regulations also support different M.Tech categories, including regular, sponsored, project-staff and part-time routes.

IIIT Bhagalpur Campus & Hostel Facilities

IIIT Bhagalpur’s permanent campus at Sabour, Bihar is spread across approximately 50 acres and is now the base for all academic activities.

Campus

The campus contains academic buildings, classrooms, laboratories, a computer centre, library facilities, hostels, dining services and recreation areas. The move to the permanent campus is especially relevant to incoming students because IIIT Bhagalpur is no longer operating mainly from temporary infrastructure.

CSE laboratories support programming, data science, AI, machine learning, networks and software systems. ECE facilities cover communication, signal processing, VLSI, embedded systems and electronics. Mechatronics students work across mechanical design, electronics, automation, control, sensors and robotics.

Hostels

Separate hostels are available for boys and girls. Kautilya Boys’ Hostel has around 200 rooms and roughly 600 beds, while the girls’ hostel provides residential facilities with Wi-Fi, common areas, security and recreation.

For first-year students, hostel accommodation is normally mandatory. The 2026 reporting instructions list ₹41,000 per semester for hostel and mess together, including the advance against mess charges. Exemptions can be considered in limited circumstances such as medical grounds or where parents live in Bhagalpur.

UG Programmes

At the undergraduate level, IIIT Bhagalpur offers four 4-year B.Tech programmes:

• B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering

All four programmes admit students through JEE Main followed by JoSAA counselling. Seats remaining after the regular JoSAA rounds may be filled through CSAB Special Rounds. Eligible international and other DASA-category candidates can apply through the DASA admission route.

For the 2026-27 admission cycle, IIIT Bhagalpur has a total B.Tech intake of 474 seats, including female-only supernumerary seats.

PG Programmes

At the postgraduate level, IIIT Bhagalpur currently offers three 2-year M.Tech programmes:

• M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (through Computer Science and Engineering)
• M.Tech in VLSI and Embedded Systems (through Electronics and Communication Engineering)
• M.Tech in Electric Vehicle Technology (through Mechatronics and Automation Engineering)

Regular M.Tech admission is primarily intended for candidates with a relevant undergraduate degree and a valid GATE score. Depending on the admission category and seats available, the institute can also announce its own admission process for sponsored, part-time or vacant-seat candidates.

Doctoral Programmes

IIIT Bhagalpur offers PhD programmes in engineering, sciences and related interdisciplinary areas. The principal research departments include:

Both full-time and part-time research categories are recognised under the institute’s doctoral regulations. Full-time research scholars can receive institute or external fellowship support subject to eligibility and satisfactory academic progress. IIIT Bhagalpur Eligibility Criteria

B.Tech Eligibility

• Candidates must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination with the subjects required under the NIT+ admission rules.
• A valid JEE Main rank is mandatory.
• Candidates generally need at least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 or must fall within the category-wise top 20 percentile of their respective board.
• The minimum marks requirement is 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
• The same eligibility framework applies to all four B.Tech programmes.

M.Tech Eligibility

M.Tech applicants need an appropriate bachelor’s or equivalent qualifying degree relevant to the chosen specialisation.

• Artificial Intelligence and Data Science: Suitable backgrounds include Computer Science, Information Technology and related computing or engineering disciplines. Candidates with qualifications such as MCA or an appropriate M.Sc. may also be considered where permitted by the programme rules.
• VLSI and Embedded Systems: Applicants generally come from Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation or closely related disciplines.
• Electric Vehicle Technology: Relevant backgrounds can include Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, ECE, Electronics and Instrumentation and related engineering disciplines.

The institute’s M.Tech regulations generally require a first-class qualifying degree or the prescribed minimum percentage/CGPA. Regular GATE-qualified admission uses the relevant GATE paper and programme eligibility rules applicable for that cycle.

PhD Eligibility

For a PhD in an engineering discipline, candidates can qualify through either a relevant master’s degree or, under the institute’s direct-entry provisions, a strong four-year bachelor’s degree.

Candidates with an M.Tech, M.E. or equivalent relevant master’s degree normally require first-class performance. Where no class is stated, the institute’s doctoral regulations prescribe at least 60% aggregate marks or 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale. Candidates applying directly after a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology normally require at least 70% marks or 7.5 CGPA along with a valid GATE score.

For PhD admission in Science, Mathematics or Humanities-related areas, candidates generally need a relevant master’s degree with at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA together with NET-JRF or another recognised fellowship qualification where required. Part-time candidates must additionally satisfy the employment and NOC requirements applicable to their category.

IIIT Bhagalpur Admission Process 2026-27

B.Tech Admission

Entry route: JEE Main followed by JoSAA counselling.

Candidates first appear for JEE Main and obtain an All India Rank. Eligible students then register for JoSAA and enter IIIT Bhagalpur’s four B.Tech programmes in their preferred order. Seat allocation takes place across multiple rounds according to JEE Main rank, category, seat pool, programme preference and seat availability.

Once a seat is allotted, candidates complete the required seat-acceptance payment and document verification through the counselling system. After the final allotment, students report to IIIT Bhagalpur, pay the remaining institute fee after adjustment of the counselling payment and complete original-document verification and hostel admission.

CSAB Special Round

Entry route: JEE Main rank followed by separate CSAB registration.

CSAB Special Rounds take place after the regular JoSAA process and are used to fill seats that remain vacant in the NIT+ system. Candidates have to register separately for CSAB and participate in its own choice filling and allotment process. Since only vacant seats are available, the number of seats in each IIIT Bhagalpur branch can vary considerably from one year to another.

DASA Admission

Entry route: DASA central admission process.

Candidates eligible under the DASA framework apply through the centrally administered DASA process rather than the regular domestic JoSAA route. The institute’s B.Tech admission page recognises JoSAA, CSAB and DASA as the principal undergraduate admission channels.

M.Tech Admission

Entry route: GATE followed by the applicable postgraduate counselling/admission process.

Regular M.Tech applicants first obtain a valid GATE score in an appropriate paper and apply for the programme and admission route notified for that cycle. Selection depends on the candidate’s academic eligibility, GATE performance, category and programme preference. Where central counselling is used, candidates complete that counselling process before reporting to IIIT Bhagalpur.

The institute can also announce direct admission tests or interviews for particular categories or seats remaining outside the regular GATE-based route. Applicants should therefore check the current M.Tech notice rather than assuming that every seat is filled in exactly the same manner.

PhD Admission

Entry route: Direct application to IIIT Bhagalpur.

PhD applicants apply directly to the institute for the department and research area in which vacancies are announced. Applications are first checked for academic and category-specific eligibility. Eligible candidates are then selected through the institute’s research-admission process, which can include a written admission test followed by an interview.

IIIT Bhagalpur normally considers PhD admission around the beginning of the Autumn and Spring semesters. Sponsored and part-time applicants must also submit the relevant sponsorship certificate or employer No Objection Certificate. Full-time scholars admitted under eligible fellowship categories can receive institute or externally funded assistantship.

IIIT Bhagalpur Cutoff 2026

IIIT Bhagalpur admissions use different cutoff systems depending on the programme. B.Tech admission is based on JEE Main ranks through JoSAA and CSAB, while regular M.Tech admission uses GATE scores through CCMT. For B.Tech, the figures below use OPEN, gender-neutral All India seats unless stated otherwise. For M.Tech, the cutoff is expressed as the minimum GATE score for the relevant CCMT round.

B.Tech Cutoff 2026

Computer Science and Engineering remained the most competitive B.Tech programme at IIIT Bhagalpur in 2026. In JoSAA Round 1, CSE closed at 41,599, followed by Mathematics and Computing at 43,671, ECE at 44,609 and Mechatronics and Automation Engineering at 49,547.

By the final regular JoSAA round, the closing ranks had moved to 48,416 for CSE, 51,316 for Mathematics and Computing, 52,650 for ECE and 57,309 for Mechatronics and Automation Engineering.

All four programmes showed some relaxation in closing rank across JoSAA. Mechatronics and Automation had the widest final range, while CSE remained the most selective branch throughout the regular rounds.

IIIT Bhagalpur CSAB Cutoff 2026

After JoSAA, vacant seats were offered through CSAB Special Rounds. Unlike regular JoSAA reserved-category tables, the special-round figures are reported using JEE Main All India CRL ranks.

IIIT Bhagalpur M.Tech CCMT Cutoff 2026

Regular M.Tech admission at IIIT Bhagalpur is based on GATE scores through CCMT. These figures should not be compared directly with B.Tech cutoffs, as JoSAA reports JEE Main ranks while CCMT reports GATE scores. Among the programmes with published General-All India 2026 CCMT data, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science had the highest cutoff, followed by VLSI and Embedded Systems.

IIIT Bhagalpur Cutoff Analysis

At the undergraduate level, CSE remains IIIT Bhagalpur’s most competitive programme, followed closely by Mathematics and Computing. ECE sits slightly below Mathematics and Computing in the 2026 final JoSAA ranks, while Mechatronics and Automation has the broadest admission range.

The difference between regular JoSAA and CSAB is substantial. CSE moved from 48,416 in final JoSAA to 67,746 in CSAB Round II, while Mechatronics moved from 57,309 to 1,02,413. Candidates with ranks outside the regular JoSAA range can therefore still have a realistic route through CSAB when vacancies exist.

At the postgraduate level, M.Tech Artificial Intelligence and Data Science is currently the most competitive of the programmes with published General-category cutoff data. Its 2026 Round 1 minimum GATE score was 502 and its last published score was 457, compared with 415 and 365 respectively for VLSI and Embedded Systems.

IIIT Bhagalpur Fee Structure 2026-27

B.Tech Fee

The first-semester B.Tech institute fee for the 2026 batch is ₹1,78,621.

From the second semester, the recurring institute amount is approximately ₹1,58,621.

Hostel and mess together cost ₹41,000 per semester, consisting of ₹25,000 in hostel charges and ₹16,000 as a mess advance. At unchanged rates, the academic component comes to roughly ₹12.89 lakh over four years, while hostel and mess add approximately ₹3.28 lakh. The combined current-rate estimate is therefore around ₹16.17 lakh.

M.Tech Fee

The regular M.Tech fee is substantially lower than the B.Tech fee. Tuition is ₹50,000 per semester. With library, development, registration, internet, gymkhana, career-development and medical charges, the semester academic payment is around ₹61,250–₹62,250. First-semester students additionally pay ₹18,700 in admission-time deposits and charges.

Hostel, maintenance and mess together currently come to ₹28,000 per semester for M.Tech students.

PhD Fee

PhD tuition is ₹35,000 per semester. Including the regular institute charges, the academic fee is approximately ₹47,250 in an odd semester and ₹46,250 in an even semester.

A one-time ₹18,700 payment applies at admission, and hostel plus mess is currently ₹28,000 per semester for scholars using institute accommodation.

IIIT Bhagalpur Scholarships & Financial Aid

IIIT Bhagalpur students can apply for Central Government, State Government and external scholarship schemes according to eligibility. SC and ST students can use relevant Top Class and national scholarship programmes, while post-matric schemes are available through different state governments. Students with disabilities can apply for applicable Central schemes.

Eligible regular GATE-qualified M.Tech students can receive postgraduate fellowship according to Ministry of Education norms. PhD scholars admitted under fellowship-bearing categories can receive the applicable research stipend.

Education loans are available through Vidya Lakshmi and participating banks. Eligible Bihar students can also use the Bihar Student Credit Card scheme.

IIIT Bhagalpur’s NIRF 2026 submission reports B.Tech placement and higher-study outcomes separately for the previous three graduating cohorts.

The B.Tech median package was ₹10 LPA in 2022-23, declined to ₹7 LPA in 2023-24 and recovered to ₹9 LPA in 2024-25.

M.Tech / PG Placement Trend

IIIT Bhagalpur’s postgraduate placement record is considerably smaller than its B.Tech placement record because the M.Tech programmes have much smaller graduating cohorts. The NIRF 2026 submission provides separate data for the institute’s two-year postgraduate programmes:

The first reported postgraduate cohort in this three-year series had 16 students graduating in 2022-23, of whom nine were placed at a median salary of ₹7 LPA. In 2023-24, eight PG students graduated, four were placed and two moved to higher studies, with a median salary of ₹8 LPA. For 2024-25, ten PG students graduated within the stipulated duration. Two were placed at a median salary of ₹7 LPA, while one student proceeded to higher studies.

Since these postgraduate cohorts contain only 8–16 students, their placement percentages and median salaries can change substantially with only a few individual outcomes. They should therefore be interpreted separately from the much larger B.Tech graduating cohorts.

Internship Culture

B.Tech students can use internships to gain software, electronics, analytics, automation or research experience before final placements. The Training and Placement Cell also organises coding and mentorship initiatives such as Hacktopia, giving students opportunities to practise technical problem-solving and project development alongside placement preparation.

M.Tech students can undertake longer research or industry projects, while PhD scholars work within departmental and sponsored research projects.

IIIT Bhagalpur submits NIRF data under the Engineering and Overall categories. The institute does not currently have a numerical position in the latest published NIRF Engineering top-100 list.
