• Firstly, one must understand what the result’s percentile is. We are all versed with the JEE Main total marks of 300. Likewise, presume the JEE Main top score was 250 out of 300. The top scores will now be considered 100 percentile. The question is, how can rank be calculated from percentile?

So, to convert your JEE Main Percentile to a Rank, you will need the following figures:

• Your NTA Normalised score
• The total number of applicants who attempted the exam
• Percentage of students with grades lower than or equal to yours
• Percentage of applicants who scored higher than you
• Number of students who scored higher than you

While data for the first two aspects are readily available, figures for the remaining three data points are pretty hard to come along. Here’s what you’ll need to do to figure it out.

Consider the following scenario:

Let’s start with the January session of JEE Main. According to the NTA’s published result statistics, 8,69,010 students took the exam over three days, with two sessions each, for a total of six sessions for Paper 1 (B.E/B.Tech). NTA has announced the names of nine students who achieved a perfect score in these sessions and have been named JEE Main Toppers.

To determine your JEE Main rank, you must first evaluate the percentage of people ahead of you who have higher percentile scores. The formula would be 100, your highest score minus your percentile score.

Because the percentile is calculated on a scale of 100 to 0 for each session of examinees, the formula multiplies the total number of applicants in the January session, which is 8,69,010/100, by the percentage of candidates ahead of you to arrive at the rank.

As a result, the formula for calculating the JEE Main rank through percentile for January is as follows: 

• JEE Main probable rank = (100- NTA percentile score) X 869010 /100
• If the NTA percentile score is 90.70, JEE’s Main rank will be (100-90.70 ) X 869010/100 = 80818
• If you have an NTA score of 80.60, your JEE Main rank is (100-80.60) X 869010 /100. The rank will be 168588.

* Toppers cannot use this formula for a 100 percentile score because those are impossible to achieve.

* The generated rank is the most likely All India Rank (AIR) you can expect to achieve in JEE Main. The actual rank may differ due to a variety of factors.

How Do You Know If You Should Retake the JEE Main?

You could calculate your percentile in JEE Main and see where you stand. It means you take a hypothetical number of candidates who will take a second chance. If previous trends are followed, the figures will be 9 lakhs to 10 lakhs. Using this as a starting point, use the NTA score to determine your JEE Main rank.

What Is the Significance of the JEE Main 2021 January NTA score?

• If you have an NTA score of 80.60, your JEE Main rank is (100-80.60) X 1000000 /100. The rank will be 1,94,000, implying that you will have no chance of qualifying for JEE Advanced.

What is the Minimum NTA Percentile Required to Be Considered for JEE Advanced?

If the NTA percentile score of 89.7548849 is compared to the JEE Main cutoff from last year, it will have a chance at JEE Advanced.

IITs are indeed aspiring institutions for most engineering students. For example, a candidate who performed exceptionally well in January may wish to skip the JEE Main April session to focus on JEE Advanced preparation.
