World Soil Day:  Soil Colours Around the World

By Team Aakash Byju's | 5th December 2022

The colouring of soils is mainly due to organic matter, iron and to some extent manganese. Let's know the different soil colours around the world.

They are caused due to the decomposition of plants or animals. It can be mainly found in Croatia, northern Serbia, Europe, Asia and Canada.

Dark brown or Black

This colour indicates the presence of iron in the presence of air and water (maybe, rust). It is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions.

Red Colour

Usually due to the presence of soluble salts, gypsum, calcium, etc. They are common in the regions of Nevada, California and Arizona.

White or Clear

The colour is due to the presence of clay and organic matter. You can find this type of soil in many places in India like Southern Karnataka, Odisha, West Bengal, etc.

Yellow/Brown/Orange

The age of the soil can also be the main reason for its colour. Younger soils are lighter and old-aged soils are redder because of the amount of organic matter present in them.
