Magnus Effect:  How it Explains the Ability to “Bend” a Soccer Ball in Flight?

Magnus effect is a phenomenon characterised by any spinning object that moves through the air.

Imagine a person kicking the ball from his right leg on the right side of the centre of the ball imparting spin to the ball.

Thus, the ball will spin counterclockwise and there is an air resistance in the opposite direction of the ball’s movement.

But, there is also a thin layer around the ball due to its spinning. When the oncoming air passes near the ball, the ball gets accelerated.

Thus, the ball is pushed towards the left making a curve. Similarly, when the player kicks on the left side of the ball, it makes a curve towards the right.

This technique deviates the ball from its original trajectory so that it reaches the net when attempting to make a goal.
