Paramedical Science - Full of opportunities
A science that deals with pre-hospital emergency services is called Paramedical science; and a person working in this field is referred to as a paramedic. Physiotherapy :-

What is Physiotherapy? Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession predominantly concerned with the remediation of impairments and disabilities and the promotion of mobility, functional ability, quality of life and movement potential through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention.

A physiotherapist uses physical exercise therapy, other therapeutic agents like heat, radiation, water, electricity, etc. and massage to cure weaknesses and rebuild damaged muscles, joints and bones.

Course: Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) is a 4-year programme with 6 months internship.

Qualification required for Admission: A candidate should have passed class 12th with atleast 50% marks in Biology, Physics and Chemistry including practical. The applicant must have reached at least 17 years of age for applying for the BPT program. A candidate’s admission to this course depends on the merit and also on the performance in the entrance test. 

Job Prospects: Physiotherapist can get employment anywhere in the hospitals be it ICU or Geriatrics. There is also scope for private practice.

Occupational Therapy

What is Occupational Therapy? Occupational therapy treatment focuses on helping people achieve independence in all areas of their lives. OT can help kids with various needs, improve their cognitive, physical, and motor skills and enhance their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.

An occupational therapist rehabilitates physically handicapped and mentally retarded persons. It is a kind of treatment imparted through indulging in different activities like handicrafts, manual and industrial art, recreation and activities of daily living.

Course: Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOT) is a 4-year programme with 6 months internship.

Qualification required for Admission: Candidate should have passed class 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. It is mandatory for all candidates to appear in the entrance test for admission to BOT undergraduate programme.

Job Prospects: BOT graduatescan find employment in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and diagnostic centres apart from offering freelance services.  

Speech Therapy

What is Speech Therapy? Speech therapy is concerned with the management of disorders of speech, communication, language and swallowing in children and adults.

A Speech Therapist is concerned with the treatment of loss of hearing and problems of speaking. He/she imparts treatment for speech impairments like stammering and other communication disabilities through psychological help and supportive speech therapy.

Course: B.Sc in Audiology and Speech Therapy is a 3 years programme.

Qualification required for Admission: The applicant should have passed the Pre-University, or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology with atleast 50% marks or graduated in Psychology/Education as desirable. He/she should be between 17-25 years.

Job Prospects: They can find employment in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, schools, Medical departments of the state and central governments etc. They can also offer freelance service.
Prosthetic & Orthotic Engineering:

Prosthetic & Orthotic engineering involves manufacture of artificial structures which may replace the inoperative or missing parts of the body.

Course: Diploma course in Prosthetic or Orthotic Engineering (DPOE). The duration of the course is 2 years followed by Internship of 6 months.

Qualification required for Diploma in Prosthetic or Orthotic Engineering: Candidate must have passed class 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology with minimum of 50% marks in each of the core subject and 45% for reserved category.

Job Prospects: They can find employment in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, diagnostic centres, polyclinics etc.

Homeopathy :-

Homeopathy is a system of medicine recognised as dynamic art of healing. Though this system was developed abroad yet it has become an integral part of the existing therapies that impacts Indian way of life. There are many colleges in India that conducts Homeopathy courses.

Course:  Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) is a 5 and ½ years course including compulsory internship of 1 year duration. A 3 year long MD in homeopathy is also available once the candidate has reached at the post graduate level.

Qualification required for Admission:  A candidate should have passed class 12th with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as subjects. He/she should have attained the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission.

Job prospectus: They can get jobs as Homeopathy doctors in Homeo clinics or can practice independently.

Other Paramedical Courses 


What is Nursing? Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities. It includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. 
A nurse assists doctors and renders services to the patients in getting the temperature and pulse recorded, administering medication both orally and through injections, changing dressings, giving personal care, preparing patients for surgery etc.

  3. Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) - 10th passed.
  4. Health worker (female) - 10th passed.

Job Prospects: Opportunities are flooded for these professionals as they can get employment anywhere whether it is hospitals, nursing homes, sanatoria, schools, industry or in private medical clinics. There are opportunities with Defence Forces, where nursing graduates can aspire to become commissioned officers.


They are concerned with production of pharmaceutical products, development of the methods of production and quality control. They also deliver medicines as per the prescription given by a doctor and give instructions regarding the mode of consumption of medicine.

  1. Diploma in Pharmacy (D. Pharm) - 2 years
