We often make mistakes while conversing in English and writing it even though we have studied English in schools and colleges. This usually happens because when we speak the language, it sounds correct in our minds but is in fact incorrect grammatically.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; padding-top: 10px; text-align: justify;\">But, do not worry! Here, we have compiled a list of the 5 most common grammatical errors so that you can avoid the same mistakes.<\/p>\n<h2>5 Most Common Grammatical Errors<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; padding-top: 10px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 15px; font-weight: bold;\">1) It\u2019s\/Its<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">These similar-sounding words confuse many people hence it becomes important to understand the correct usage of these words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Its- this is used to convey possession<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">It\u2019s-this is a short form of \u201cit is\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">For example &#8211; a) The dog is wagging <b>its<\/b> tail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 123px;\">b) It\u2019s only 11 o\u2019clock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; padding-top: 10px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 15px; font-weight: bold;\">2) Me Vs I<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">This is one of the most commonly made errors. Most people understand the difference between the two but you will hear them making mistakes like- <b>\u201cTom is taller than me.\u201d<\/b> This is an incorrect sentence. The correct sentence is <b>\u201cTom is taller than I.\u201d<\/b> How do we know this is the correct usage? Well, try adding \u201cam\u201d at the end of the second sentence. \u201cTom is taller than I am.\u201d Sounds correct, right? The reason is that we often omit the word \u201cam\u201d at the end of the sentence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><b>A quick tip<\/b> &#8211; Whenever there is a comparison or a sense of comparison in a sentence, we use \u2018I\u2019 and not \u2018me\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; padding-top: 10px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 15px; font-weight: bold;\">3) Can\/May<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">These two words are also often confused. You must have seen students ask -\u201dCan I come in?\u201d Well, if someone asks me that, I usually reply-\u201cYou <b>can<\/b> but you <b>may<\/b> not!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">This is because it is incorrect to say that!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Can<\/b> is usually used to talk about ability. For example-I can do my homework on my own.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><b>May<\/b> is usually used for permissions. For example- May I come in? May I take that pen?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; padding-top: 10px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 15px; font-weight: bold;\">4) Usage of \u2018The\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">English grammar probably starts with teaching us the usage of \u2018a\/an\/the\u2019 but we still go wrong in using them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Here is a list, where \u2018the\u2019 is <b>not<\/b> used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">a) Names of proper nouns. (specific names of people, place or thing)]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">b) Countries, states, towns. However, there are some exceptions to that like \u2018The United States of America and The Netherlands\u2019. However, there is an explanation as to why these countries have \u2018the\u2019 before them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; padding-top: 10px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 15px; font-weight: bold;\">5) Affect\/Effect<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">This is a very easy mistake to make. These two words are often used interchangeably but that is not the right usage of the words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Affect is a verb. For example &#8211; A lot of people were <b>affected<\/b> because of the famine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Effect is a noun. The movie affected me greatly.
