Once you decide to take up medicine as a possibility after 10th<\/sup> standard, things might get complicated. The main issue that we will face is to choose between our mind and heart. Our mind would often encourage us to choose medicine after considering the subjective viewpoints of the society and our immediate surroundings. But at times, we forget what our heart and our own desires want.<\/p>\n

So whether you choose to become a doctor, nurse or a physician, consider answering a few of these questions:<\/h2>\n

Dedication \u2013 Are you into it for the long run?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Medicine is not a career that we can expect from the weak hearted. When one chooses medicine, you are signing up for five to six years of study with frequent exams. Graduation from a medical college is simply the beginning. Once you leave a medical school, you have to get through many years of foundation training, where your competence in managing acutely sick patients will be assessed. During this course, you will have to get through full-time training, with no breaks in between even if you are sick.<\/p>\n

Mental Ability \u2013 Are you strong enough to deal with stressful situations?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Excellent grades might get you into a good hospital or clinic, but it would not mean that you would not get into any kind of difficulty. Professions that involve life and death are beyond just stress and require you to keep up with challenging situations. If you freak out easily, then you should reconsider your career in medicine. But, if you are someone who remains calm under pressure, then working in the medicine field can be really idle for you.<\/p>\n

Interest \u2013 Are you really interested in Medical Science?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Suppose you have the dedication and mental ability, but if you lack the fundamental interest in helping people or medical science, then there is a problem. Working in the medical field is not an easy thing. It can be tough physically as well as emotionally. But, if you really want to make a difference in a person\u2019s life then it may be worth the effort. Make sure to be honest with yourself and determine if that is something you can really do.<\/p>\n

Acceptance \u2013 Is work\/life balance important to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Consider how many hours you want to devote to your career as well as how much family or social time is important to you. In the latter stages of your undergraduate degree, you will still be looking out for clinical and academic examinations, while your non-medical friends will have completed their studies and started with their careers. You will have to miss out on parties and other social gatherings. Even when you would not have work, you would still have lots of things to be getting on with. The situation can become even more problematic for you when you get into family responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Communication Skills \u2013 Are you a people person?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Medical college programs now pay much greater attention to equipping their students with the necessary communication skills. Sadly, there are still some students who with all the required training in the world, struggle with the communication demands required in the medical field. Although there are some exceptions as medical workers always need to be around other people. If you do not enjoy being around other people, you may find working in the medical field a big challenge. But if you have strong interpersonal skills and consider yourself to be a people person, then you may be on the right track.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve asked these questions, you should be able to narrow down your focus. If you are not completely sure, then you need to consider taking an aptitude test after standard 10th<\/sup>. Talk to parents, teachers, or career counselors or other important people in life as there is no single question that can discuss your career choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
