The institute currently conducts its academic activities from the campus of Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology Bhopal, which has acted as its mentor institution. IIIT Bhopal’s permanent campus is planned at Fatehpur Dogra on approximately 60.98 acres.

The most important recent change at IIIT Bhopal is the scale of its academic expansion. The institute now offers nine B.Tech programmes rather than the earlier three-branch structure

centred on CSE, IT and ECE.

Current programmes include Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, CSE with Artificial Intelligence, CSE with Data Science, CSE with Cyber Security, CSE with Cyber Physical Systems, Mathematics and Computing, and Physics and Computational Engineering.

At postgraduate level, IIIT Bhopal offers M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Cyber Physical Systems. It also offers a full-time MCA programme and PhD programmes through CSE, IT, ECE, Physics and Mathematics.

IIIT Bhopal Campus & Hostel Facilities

IIIT Bhopal currently operates academically from MANIT Bhopal. Students attend classes and use institute academic facilities within the MANIT-based setup while IIIT Bhopal continues to develop its own institutional infrastructure.

Campus

The proposed permanent campus at Fatehpur Dogra is planned to include academic blocks, laboratories, research spaces, startup and innovation facilities, an auditorium and residential infrastructure.

The current departments support computing, information technology, electronics, mathematics and physics. The newer programmes broaden the teaching requirement considerably: AI, Data Science and Cyber Security sit primarily within computing, Cyber Physical Systems connects software with physical and embedded systems, Mathematics and Computing combines formal mathematical training with algorithms, and Physics and Computational Engineering links physical sciences with modelling and computation.

Hostel

Hostel accommodation is presently arranged at external facilities rather than in one fully operational IIIT Bhopal residential campus. Recent arrangements have included NITTTR, RGPV, BHEL and SSSCW accommodation, with different room types and charges.

The annual hostel fee varies according to location and room sharing. Recent published figures range from approximately ₹55,200 to ₹64,800 per year, while mess charges have been around ₹35,000–₹41,000 per year. Bus transport is also part of the present arrangement because hostel and academic locations can be separate.

IIIT Bhopal Highlights 2026-27

Particular

Details

Established

2017

Status

Institute of National Importance

Current Academic Campus

MANIT Bhopal

Planned Permanent Campus

Fatehpur Dogra

Planned Campus Area

Approx. 60.98 acres

B.Tech Programmes

9

B.Tech Seats

1,188

Core CSE Seats

288

IT Seats

180

ECE Seats

180

Other programme intake

90 each

B.Tech Admission

JEE Main + JoSAA

M.Tech

AI, Data Science, Cyber Physical Systems

MCA

Available

PhD

CSE, IT, ECE, Physics, Mathematics

2026 CSE Final Closing Rank

30,996

2026 AI Closing Rank

31,763

2026 Average Package

₹18.92 LPA

2026 Highest Package

₹62 LPA

2026 Placement Rate

91.33%

Courses and Specialisations in IIIT Bhopal

UG Programmes

B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering

Core CSE is the largest programme with 288 seats. Coursework includes programming, algorithms, software engineering, networks, AI/ML and advanced applications.

The programme has its own admission notifications, and IIIT Bhopal also conducts institute spot counselling when seats remain vacant after the main admission process. Candidates should therefore follow the current MCA admission notice rather than assuming that M.Tech/CCMT procedures apply to MCA.

PhD Programmes

IIIT Bhopal offers PhD programmes through five academic areas:

PhD in CSE

Research may cover AI, machine learning, cloud systems, cybersecurity, distributed computing and related computer-science areas.

PhD in Information Technology

IT research overlaps with data science, networking, cloud computing, information systems and computational technologies.

PhD in ECE

ECE research covers communication systems, signal processing, electronics, hardware and related technologies.

PhD in Physics

Physics research includes materials, devices and computational or interdisciplinary physical-science themes.

PhD in Mathematics

Mathematics research supports theoretical and applied work and provides a research base for the institute’s Mathematics and Computing programme.

Course-wise Duration & Admission Route

Programme

Duration

Admission Route

B.Tech

4 years

JEE Main + JoSAA

M.Tech

2 years

GATE + CCMT / spot route

MCA

Full-time

Institute admission process / notified route

PhD

Varies

Direct institute application

Eligibility Criteria

B.Tech Eligibility

Applicants need JEE Main and must satisfy the standard NIT+ Class 12 eligibility requirements.

This normally means at least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 or a category-wise top-20-percentile position. SC, ST and PwD candidates have a 65% aggregate threshold.

M.Tech Eligibility

For regular scholarship-bearing CCMT seats, candidates need a valid GATE score and a relevant qualifying degree.

The standard CCMT requirement is at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA for General/EWS/OBC applicants and 55% or 6.0 CGPA for SC/ST/PwD candidates. Programme-specific qualifying degrees and GATE papers are given in the CCMT eligibility matrix.

Applicants to AI and Data Science generally come from CSE, IT and allied backgrounds, while Cyber Physical Systems can accommodate relevant computing, electronics or interdisciplinary engineering backgrounds according to the current eligibility matrix.

MCA Eligibility

MCA applicants need the bachelor’s-degree and mathematics requirements specified in the current institute admission notification.

Since the MCA process is separate from CCMT, students should follow IIIT Bhopal’s dedicated MCA application or counselling notice for the current cycle.

PhD Eligibility

PhD eligibility depends on the department and applicant category.

Candidates generally need a relevant postgraduate engineering, science or computing qualification and may need GATE, NET/JRF or another recognised national-level qualification depending on the department and admission category.

Selection includes institute-level evaluation, and candidates may be required to appear for a written test and interview.

IIIT Bhopal Admission Process 2026-27

B.Tech Admission

B.Tech candidates qualify JEE Main and register for JoSAA. As IIIT Bhopal now offers nine programmes, choice order deserves particular attention. Students should distinguish between the broad core CSE/IT programmes and the more specialised AI, Data Science, Cyber Security and CPS routes rather than selecting only on the basis of last year’s cutoff.

JoSAA allocates the highest available preference according to rank, category and seat availability. Students who accept a seat complete counselling payments, online verification and institute reporting.

CSAB Special Rounds

Vacant B.Tech seats after regular JoSAA counselling move to CSAB. Students must register separately and follow the special-round rules. Previous CSAB data can help estimate how far programmes have moved after JoSAA, although available vacancies vary each year.

M.Tech Admission

Regular M.Tech admission uses GATE and CCMT. Applicants register on CCMT, fill programme choices and are allotted seats based on GATE score, category and eligibility.

IIIT Bhopal has also conducted M.Tech spot counselling when seats remain vacant. Candidates considering this route need to follow the current institute notice because the branches, seat vacancies and eligibility conditions can differ each year.

MCA Admission

MCA applicants apply through the admission mechanism announced by IIIT Bhopal. If seats remain after the regular process, the institute can conduct spot counselling. Students need to carry the required academic, identity and category documents and pay the prescribed fee if selected.

PhD Admission

PhD candidates apply directly to the institute. Applications are screened department-wise, and eligible candidates proceed through the research-admission selection process. The institute publishes separate PhD notifications rather than using JoSAA or CCMT.

Typical Admission Timeline

Programme

Typical Sequence

B.Tech

JEE Main → JoSAA → CSAB if needed

M.Tech

GATE → CCMT → institute reporting/spot round if vacant

MCA

Institute-notified admission process → spot round if vacant

PhD

Institute application → departmental selection

IIIT Bhopal B.Tech. Current faculty and project activity covers AI-assisted healthcare, advanced materials, cloud systems, cybersecurity and computational research.

For students considering postgraduate study, the presence of M.Tech and PhD programmes creates opportunities to work on research-oriented projects rather than relying only on industry internships.

IIIT Bhopal Ranking

IIIT Bhopal does not currently have a numerical position in the latest published NIRF Engineering top-100 list.

The institute’s profile is changing rapidly because of its expansion from three core undergraduate branches to nine B.Tech programmes, the addition of M.Tech/MCA education and the development of a permanent campus.

FAQs About IIIT Bhopal

1. Is IIIT Bhopal a good college?

IIIT Bhopal is an Institute of National Importance with a rapidly expanding academic portfolio. It currently offers nine B.Tech programmes along with M.Tech, MCA and PhD programmes, so the institute has moved beyond its earlier structure centred mainly on CSE, IT and ECE. Its latest 2026 placement update reports a 91.33% placement rate among participating students, an average package of ₹18.92 LPA and a highest package of ₹62 LPA. The institute is still developing its independent permanent campus, but its academic expansion and recent placement performance make it an important option within the newer IIIT group.

2. How many B.Tech seats are there at IIIT Bhopal?

The 2026 seat matrix lists a total of 1,188 B.Tech seats across nine programmes. Core Computer Science and Engineering has the largest intake with 288 seats, while Information Technology and Electronics and Communication Engineering have 180 seats each. The specialised programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cyber Security, Cyber Physical Systems, Mathematics and Computing, and Physics and Computational Engineering have 90 seats each. This gives applicants a much wider choice of branches than the institute offered in its earlier years.

3. What is the CSE cutoff at IIIT Bhopal?

For OPEN gender-neutral seats in 2026, B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering closed at 30,996 in the final regular JoSAA Round 5. CSE remained the most competitive programme at IIIT Bhopal during regular counselling. Applicants preparing for the next admission cycle can use this rank as a reference, but actual cutoffs change each year depending on JEE Main performance, programme demand, seat availability and counselling movement. Candidates slightly outside the regular JoSAA range can also examine CSAB Special Round trends.

4. What is the AI cutoff at IIIT Bhopal?

B.Tech CSE with Artificial Intelligence closed at 31,763 in the final regular JoSAA round for OPEN gender-neutral seats in 2026. This placed it very close to core CSE in terms of admission demand. The programme is designed for students who want a stronger formal focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning while still studying the core foundations of computer science. The cutoff can move further during CSAB if seats remain vacant after regular JoSAA counselling.

5. What is the B.Tech fee at IIIT Bhopal?

The current first-year institute fee is approximately ₹2.98 lakh, including tuition, other academic charges, one-time payments and refundable caution money. At unchanged rates, the academic cost across four years is around ₹11.28 lakh. Hostel, mess and transport are charged separately because IIIT Bhopal currently uses different residential facilities rather than one fully integrated permanent residential campus. The final four-year expenditure is therefore higher once accommodation, food and transport are included.

6. What is the average package at IIIT Bhopal?

The latest 2026 placement update reports an overall average package of ₹18.92 LPA. Among the established branches, CSE recorded an average of ₹19.56 LPA, IT ₹17.13 LPA and ECE ₹17.16 LPA. These branch-wise figures are useful because they show that placement outcomes are not identical across programmes. The newer specialisations such as AI, Data Science and Cyber Security do not yet have the same length of graduating placement history as CSE, IT and ECE.

7. What is the highest package at IIIT Bhopal?

The highest package reported in the latest 2026 placement update is ₹62 LPA. Both CSE and ECE recorded offers at this level in the available branch-wise data, while IT reached a highest package of ₹58 LPA. Although the highest package is useful as a headline figure, applicants should also look at the overall average package of ₹18.92 LPA and the branch-wise averages to understand the broader placement performance.

8. Which M.Tech programmes are offered at IIIT Bhopal?

IIIT Bhopal currently offers M.Tech programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Cyber Physical Systems. The AI programme focuses on advanced machine learning and intelligent systems, while Data Science covers analytics, statistical learning and large-scale data processing. Cyber Physical Systems combines computing with embedded and physical systems, making it relevant to areas such as robotics, autonomous systems, embedded computing and intelligent infrastructure. Regular full-time M.Tech admission is primarily based on GATE followed by CCMT.

9. Does IIIT Bhopal offer MCA?

Yes. IIIT Bhopal offers a full-time Master of Computer Applications programme in addition to its M.Tech courses. MCA follows a separate admission route from M.Tech and is intended for students seeking postgraduate education in computing and software technologies. Admission is based on the process notified for the relevant cycle, and the institute may also conduct spot counselling if seats remain vacant after the main admission process. Students should therefore follow the current MCA admission notice rather than the CCMT process used for M.Tech.

10. Does IIIT Bhopal have a permanent campus?

IIIT Bhopal currently conducts its academic activities from MANIT Bhopal rather than from a fully operational independent permanent campus. A separate permanent IIIT Bhopal campus is planned at Fatehpur Dogra on approximately 60.98 acres. Until that campus becomes fully functional, academic activities and student accommodation continue through the institute’s present arrangements, including hostel facilities located at different institutions or residential locations around Bhopal.

About IIIT Bhopal Indian Institute of Information Technology Bhopal is an Institute of National Importance established in 2017 under the Public-Private Partnership model.
