That tells you everything about how selective this exam is.

What Is the JEE Advanced Rank List?

The rank list is not just a sorted table of scores. It is an officially prepared merit list that determines who is eligible for IIT admissions. Only candidates whose names appear in the rank list can participate in JoSAA 2026 counselling for IIT seats.

To be included in the rank list, a candidate must satisfy two conditions simultaneously:

Subject-wise minimum marks: You must score the prescribed minimum in each of the three subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics), calculated across Paper 1 and Paper 2 combined.

Aggregate minimum marks: You must also cross the overall qualifying marks out of 360.

Missing even one subject minimum means no rank, regardless of how high your total score is. This is a rule that catches many candidates off guard, so it is worth double-checking your scorecard subject-by-subject.

Types of Rank Lists in JEE Advanced 2026

Your scorecard will show two ranks: your Common Rank List (CRL) rank and your category rank (if applicable). Here is what each means:

Rank List

Who It Covers

Common Rank List (CRL)

All qualified candidates regardless of category

OBC-NCL Rank List

Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer)

GEN-EWS Rank List

Economically Weaker Section (General)

SC Rank List

Scheduled Caste candidates

ST Rank List

Scheduled Tribe candidates

PwD Rank List

Persons with Disability

Preparatory Course List

Candidates just below SC/ST/PwD cutoff

During JoSAA counselling, your category rank is what determines your eligibility for reserved seats. So if you are an OBC-NCL or SC/ST candidate, pay attention to both your CRL and your category rank, as they can open up very different options.

JEE Advanced 2026 Qualifying Cutoffs

Here are the official minimum marks to make it into the rank list this year:

Category

Min. Marks per Subject

Min. Aggregate (out of 360)

CRL (General)

8 marks

92 marks (25.56%)

OBC-NCL

7 marks

82 marks (22.78%)

GEN-EWS

7 marks

82 marks (22.78%)

SC / ST / PwD

4 marks

46 marks (12.78%)

Preparatory Course

2 marks

23 marks (6.39%)

One important thing to understand: clearing the qualifying cutoff is just the entry ticket to the rank list. Getting an actual IIT seat depends on your rank and the opening and closing ranks published during JoSAA counselling rounds. Those admission cutoffs are significantly higher than the qualifying cutoffs shown above.

The IIT Delhi zone dominated the top of the rankings, producing five of the top 10 rank holders. IIT Madras recorded the highest total qualified candidates among all zones, with 14,294 students securing a rank.

What Your Rank Means for IIT Admissions

Not all IIT seats are equally competitive. Here is a rough sense of the rank ranges for popular branches, based on recent trends:

Branch & IIT

Approx. CRL Closing Rank

CSE, IIT Bombay

~66

CSE, IIT Delhi

~100

CSE, IIT Madras

~150

Electrical Engg., IIT Bombay

~300

Mechanical Engg., IIT Delhi

~1,500

Civil / Metallurgy, older IITs

5,000 and above

These are indicative ranges from recent JoSAA data and will be updated as 2026 counselling rounds progress. If your rank sits below the top few hundred, do not be discouraged. There are 18,951 IIT seats available this year across all branches and campuses.

What to Do Right Now: A Checklist

If you are in the rank list, here is exactly what you should be doing:

Download your scorecard from jeeadv.ac.in and save both a soft copy and a printout

Note your CRL and category rank and use them for JoSAA planning

Register for JoSAA 2026 counselling at josaa.nic.in (registration opened June 2, 2026)

Research IIT opening and closing ranks from previous years to shortlist realistic options

Fill preferences wisely across dream, realistic, and safe choices; do not just go by college name

Keep documents ready including Class 10 and 12 marksheets, category certificate (if applicable), and identity proof

The Bottom Line

Your JEE Advanced 2026 rank is now official, and it is just the starting point of the admissions journey, not the finish line. The students who make the best use of their rank are the ones who go into JoSAA counselling prepared, with realistic expectations and well-researched choices.

Check jeeadv.ac.in for your scorecard and josaa.nic.in for counselling updates. The next few weeks are going to move fast.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: My scorecard shows two ranks: a CRL rank and a category rank. Which one matters more for IIT admissions?

Both matter, just in different ways. Your CRL (Common Rank List) rank applies to open category seats, which are available to everyone. Your category rank applies to reserved seats under your respective quota. During JoSAA counselling, the system considers both and allocates the best possible seat based on all available options. So if your CRL rank is high enough, you could get an open seat even in a competitive branch.

Q2: The top 10 scorers all got 310+ marks. Does that mean a rank below 1,000 is worthless?

Absolutely not. A rank beyond the top few hundred still gives you access to a wide range of IIT branches across multiple campuses. IITs like Roorkee, Kharagpur, Hyderabad, Indore, and others have very good programmes in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, and other branches that close well beyond AIR 1,000.

Q3: I qualified with a rank of around 30,000. Is there any realistic IIT branch available at that rank?

Yes, certain branches at newer IITs such as IIT Dharwad, IIT Palakkad, IIT Tirupati, IIT Bhilai, and similar campuses have closing ranks that go well beyond 20,000 in some categories, especially for branches like Civil Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Mining. That said, the exact closing ranks will be confirmed only after JoSAA 2026 rounds.

IIT you can apply to, which branch you can get, and what your options look like during JoSAA counselling.
