The liver is the second largest and the most complex organ in the body, with the exception of the brain. It plays a very important role in your body’s immunity, digestion, and metabolism. Everything you eat or drink passes through the liver. You cannot survive without a liver. It is an organ that can be easily damaged if you don’t take good care of it.

Liver is also responsible for the production of proteins for blood plasma, conversion of glucose into glycogen, amino acid regulation, and more. In addition, if a person has diabetes they need to take extra care of their liver.

Diabetes is the second leading reason for liver failure and transplants in India. Diabetes causes the body to become resistant to insulin, which increases blood sugar levels. Liver diseases do not show symptoms until it’s too late. Hence, it is important for us to eat healthy food and regularly go for full body checkups to eliminate the chances of any fatal disease. Therefore, here are some ways to keep it healthy and functioning:

Indulge yourself in physical activities such as swimming, cycling, walking or yoga.

Reduce sodium and caffeine intake to keep your blood pressure in check.

Colas, sodas, carbonated drinks, sweets, fruit juices, and candies can cause liver disease. Hence, it is important for us to limit the intake of these items.

Eat at regular intervals and monitor the quantity.

Exercise every day for half an hour and include grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables in your diet.

Manage blood sugar levels by eating the right foods and avoiding junk food.

This World Liver Day, let us all pledge to stay committed to the day’s objective of spreading awareness about a healthy lifestyle. Let us all create a healthy planet by following simple practices like avoiding fatty and greasy foods and staying committed to our mental and physical health.

After all, HEALTH IS THE GREATEST WEALTH!!!

World Liver Day is observed every 19 April, to spread awareness about liver-related diseases.
