The technician or doctor conducting the test places a clip on the nose of the patient being examined. Also, they provide a plastic mouthpiece to the patient that stays connected to the spirometer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, the patient will be asked to place the mouthpiece tightly to the lips, take a deep breath (as deep as possible), and breathe out hard (as hard and fast as possible). It is crucial to put maximum effort, and the process is repeated at least three times to obtain optimal results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctor might also give the patient some medication (bronchodilator) that helps open airways and then perform the test again to see if the medication improves breathing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The complete spirometry process can take up to 15 to 30 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The after-effects of the spirometry test<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The after-effects of the test are short-lived, usually for a minute or two. They can be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dizzy feeling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors do not recommend this test to a person who has recently had a heart attack or some other severe heart condition, as the test procedure requires the patient to exert some force.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What does spirometry measure?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spirometry measures the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Forced vital capacity (FVC)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FVC is the maximum amount of air that a patient can forcefully exhale after taking as deep a breath as possible. If you find the reading lower than what the normal reading shows, that indicates restricted breathing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Forced expiratory volume (FEV)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FEV is the amount of air that a patient can exhale from their lungs in one second. It helps a doctor estimate the degree of bronchial obstruction and the severity of the patient\u2019s breathing issue. A lower FEV-1 reading is an indication of a more pronounced pulmonary obstruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Understanding some important concepts related to respiration and spirometry<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students often find it challenging to understand various volumes and capacities related to spirometry and respiration. Here is a simplified version in an easy to understand and remember format.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Respiratory Cycle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: One inhalation plus one exhalation constitutes a respiratory cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Respiratory rate:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The number of respiratory cycles completed per minute is called the respiratory rate. The normal rate is 12-16 per minute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tidal volume:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Suppose you are sitting in a relaxed position. Now you take in a breath and breathe out once. This volume of air you take in or breathe out is called tidal volume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Inspiratory Reserve Volume or IRV<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The maximum amount of air you can inhale in addition to the tidal volume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Expiratory Reserve Volume or ERV:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The maximum amount of air that a person can exhale in addition to the tidal volume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Residual Volume or RV<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The amount of air left in the lungs after maximum exhalation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capacities are additions of different lung volumes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Inspiratory Capacity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: TV + IRV<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Expiratory Capacity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: TV + ERV<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Total Lung Capacity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: TV + IRV + ERV + RV<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can understand total lung capacity as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suppose you just exhaled up to your maximum. So, you exhaled out ERV.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now your lung has residual volume.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will first fill up ERV, then TV, and finally IRV when you breathe in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, a total of RV, ERV, TV, and your total lung capacity. Normally it is up to 5.8 to 6 litres.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Functional Residual Capacity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You do not exhale ERV nor inhale IRV when you breathe normally. So, your lungs carry RV and ERV, i.e., the functional residual capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Vital Capacity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> TLC &#8211; RV<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image source: researchgate<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3>Spirometry Results: Normal Values<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The normal values are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tidal Volume-TV = 500 mL<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspiratory Reserve Volume (TRV) = 3000 mL<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV) = 1100 mL<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residual Volume (RV) = 1200 mL<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspiratory Capacity (IC) = 3500 mL<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Functional Residual Capacity (FRC) = 2300 mL<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vital Capacity (VC) = 4600 mL<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total Lung Capacity-TLC = 5800 mL<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Conclusion\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aakash.ac.in\/important-concepts\/biology\/spirometry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spirometry<\/a> has become a modern way to test the presence of various lung diseases. If these diseases are diagnosed in time, they can be cured with the help of medication and, in worst cases, surgeries. If your spirometry score is above 70%, you are healthy. These are FEV1% values for adults.
