While Boards test subject knowledge through subjective type questions based on the NCERT textbooks, JEE tests conceptual understanding and application-based skills through multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Hence, preparing simultaneously for the two exams needs to be done methodically and meticulously.

Here’s how you can maintain the right balance between JEE and board examinations.

Know the Exam Pattern & Syllabus of Boards & JEE

Boards and JEE follow a different exam pattern. Hence, it is important to thoroughly understand the question paper pattern. For JEE, you need to strengthen your conceptual and application-based knowledge. For Boards, you need to focus on theoretical knowledge. Additionally, while JEE covers both Class 11th& 12th syllabus, Boards cover only Class 12th syllabus. Unlike JEE, there is no negative marking in Boards. Moreover, while Boards are conducted in Offline mode, JEE is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode only.

Focus on Fundamentals & Solve Numerical Problems

Strong fundamentals are the key to success in both Boards as well as JEE. Basic concepts of every topic remain the same. While preparing for your Boards, focus on understanding the concepts. And then solve a lot of questions and numerical problems on the same. This approach will help you to simultaneously prepare for JEE.

NCERT Textbooks

NCERT textbooks play an important role in the preparation of both Boards and JEE by bridging the gap between fundamentals and tricky questions. Carefully go through the NCERT textbooks for at least 4-5 times including all the examples, questions, etc. As CBSE and other Boards have reduced 30% syllabus for Boards, make sure you study only the included topics. Additionally, to cater to the different reduction in the syllabus by various Boards, NTA has decided to provide for choice in section B of the JEE (Main) question papers.

Solve Previous Years’ Papers

Previous years’ papers are the best way to familiarize you with the exam pattern. Additionally, it hones your skills, strengthens your concepts, and builds your confidence for the exam. Attempting previous years’ papers of board exams and JEE will allow you to prepare for both the exams simultaneously. Additionally, it will help build the right temperament for the exams. In Board exams, the aim should be to attempt all the questions. However, in JEE, rather than aiming at solving all the questions, you should attempt only those you are confident about and not lose marks due to negative marking.

Find the Common Thread

Some topics are common to Boards & JEE; make a note of the same. Start preparing these chapters first. Read them in-depth and practice questions on the same. It will help save your time and prepare you simultaneously for Boards & JEE.

Plan Well

Proper planning is imperative to succeed in both boards and JEE. Prepare a timetable and divide your time judiciously for the preparation of both. While preparing for boards, make sure you strengthen your concepts of the topic. It will help you immensely for JEE. A timetable not only helps in maintaining a good study routine but also helps to stay on track and complete revision in time.

Practice Writing Answers for Boards

While JEE consists of MCQ and Numerical value based questions, Boards are subjective and you will have to write answers from 30 words to even more than 80 words. Hence, it is important to practice writing answers and within the stipulated time frame. Proper planning, good speed and well-written answers that are to the point can help you score well in Boards. You should take timed mock tests to perfect your preparation as well as improve on your speed.

Juggling between the preparations of Boards & JEE is often a daunting task.
