Color of the Sunlight

Though the Sunlight looks white to us, it in fact is a combination of all colors.

Traveling

Unless there is an external distraction, the light continues to travel in a straight line.

Reflection

When a ray of light falls on a mirror, the mirror bounces back the light waves to our eyes due to which, we can see the world around us.

Refraction/Bending

When light travels through two different media, its direction changes. The pencil appears to be bent in a glass of water.

Scattering

When a light ray passes from one medium to another, it interacts with particles of the medium and travels in different directions.

Scattered Sunlight

Sunlight, when entering the earth’s atmosphere, gets scattered by interacting with the gases & particles in the air.

Blue Light

The blue colour out of all colors in the sunlight gets scattered more than any other colors in the earth’s atmosphere.

Re-scattered

Because of the tiny air particles, the blue light would have scattered and re-scattered many times. That is why the sky appears blue.

How is the Sky on Other Planets?

The sky would not look blue on other planets as there is a huge difference in the atmosphere of the earth to other planets.

Hope this helps. Keep sharing.
