Why Does the Moon Appear Giant Red During the Total Lunar Eclipse?

The moon passes into the earth’s shadow during a lunar eclipse.

Lunar Eclipse

The moon does not have its own light, the reason for its shine is because its surface reflects sunlight.

Earth’s Shadow

Earth cuts off the light supply from the sun to the moon when it is moving between them. Due to this, the moon takes a reddish glow.

Light Supply to Moon

The moon during the total lunar eclipse is also called a blood moon due to its reddish tone.

Blood Moon

A phenomenon that causes sunrise and sunset to be colorful and the same is the reason for the red color of the moon during the eclipse.

Rayleigh Scattering

Red & orange colors with longer wavelengths get scattered from the earth’s surface, they are then bent all over the surface of the earth.

Scattering

The scattered colors on the earth’s atmosphere get refracted around the earth and hit the surface of the moon making it look reddish-orange.

Refraction

Not just red, the moon also takes shades like orange and gold depending upon the earth’s atmosphere during a total lunar eclipse.

Shades

Suppose if we get a chance to see a total lunar eclipse from the moon, we can see a red ring around the earth.

The Fact!!!
