When does a Solar Eclipse Occur? What is the Concept Behind it?

BY Team Aakash Byju's

Solar eclipse occurs on a new moon day. When moon moves between the sun and earth, the moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching the earth.

The shadow of the moon falls on the parts of the earth. This phenomenon is called Solar Eclipse.

Eclipse can be seen only on those location of the earth where the moon’s shadow falls.

Solar eclipse takes place when the sun, moon and earth are nearly aligned in a straight line with moon in between.

The shadow of the moon has two parts : the Umbra and the Penumbra. In umbra region the sun is completely covered by the moon. The observers in this region see a total solar eclipse.

In penumbra region sun is partially covered by the moon. The observers in penumbra see a partial solar eclipse.

The moon blocks the light of the sun casting a shadow of 160km wide on the earth.

Because the earth and moon are on the move, solar eclipse lasts only for 71/2  minutes.
