What are the Different Types of Glands?

The major kinds of glands include Exocrine Glands and  Endocrine Glands.

Examples Sweat glands, sebaceous glands, salivary glands, digestive glands.

Exocrine glands Gland that secretes certain substances into a duct. These are glands with a duct.

Sweat glands These glands secrete wastes in the form of water.

Salivary glands  These glands secrete saliva, which helps in digestion.

Sebaceous glands:  These glands secrete sebum or oil.

Digestive glands These glands secrete digestive enzymes to digest the food.

Example:  Pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal gland, testes, ovary and pancreas.

Endocrine glands:  Gland that secretes certain hormones into the blood. These are ductless glands.

Pituitary gland: It is also known as the master gland because it controls all other glands in the body. It secretes hormones like somatotropin, thyrotrophin, etc.

Thyroid gland It secretes the thyroxine hormone, which is responsible for general growth and metabolism.

Adrenal gland It secretes adrenaline hormone, which controls emotions

Testes It secretes the Testosterone hormone, which is responsible for sperm cell production and secondary sexual characters in males.

Ovary It secretes progesterone and oestrogen hormones. These are responsible for ovulation, menstrual cycle and milk production in females.

Pancreas It secretes insulin and glucagon hormones. Insulin decreases sugar levels in the blood, and glucagon increases sugar levels in the blood.
