The Journey of Water From Lakes to Our Lives

By Team Aakash Byju's

Though tap water and water from a lake may look the same, tap water goes through a rigorous process.

The water has to go through four steps before we drink it: – Coagulation and Flocculation – Sedimentation – Filtration – Disinfection

During Coagulation and Flocculation, chemicals with a positive charge get added to neutralize the negatively charged dirt and other particles.

During Sedimentation, floc settles to the bottom of the supply and it can be easily removed.

During Filtration, the water then passes through filters made of sand, gravel and charcoal to catch dissolved particles of various sizes.

To prevent microorganisms from growing and spreading in public water systems, disinfectants are added to the water supply.

To combat declining levels of disinfectant, boosting stations administer additional doses to combat the diminished effect.

So, on this world water week, let’s take a pledge not to waste even a single drop of water.
