States of Matter: Interesting Facts That May Fascinate You

Anything that occupies space and has mass is called Matter. The air we breath, our body, planets in the solar system, the food we eat are matters to name a few.

The three basic states of matter are- 1)Solids 2)Liquids and 3)Gas.

The following are the few facts about states of matter.

Solids are generally hard because the particles of solids are closely packed. The particles vibrate about their mean position. They have definite shape and volume.

The particles of liquid are not so closed packed, they can move within the liquid. They do not have definite shape, but they have definite volume.

The particles of gas are far apart, they are free to move in space. Thats why we can move through air which contains many gases. So they do not have definite shape or volume.

The force of attraction between the particles is maximum in solids, is less in liquids than in solids, is least in gases.

The space between the particles is least in solids, more in liquids than solids. The space between the particles is maximum in gases.

Effects of pressure is very low on solids, in liquid it is more than that in solid, in air it is very high. Compressibility is minimum in solids, and maximum in gases.

Rate of diffusion is very slow in solids, moderate in liquids and very high in gases.
