How to Find the Distance Between Starting & End Point Using Directions?

A person travels 12 km in the southward direction and then travels 5 km to the right and then travels 15 km towards the right  and finally travels 5 km towards the east. How far is he from his starting place?

A.

B.

C.

D.

3 km

5 km

12 km

13.3 km

The correct answer is  option  A. 3km

Detailed Explanation

Let the person start from point P as shown in the diagram below. The diagram also shows how long he travelled in each direction.

5 km east from S

12 km south from p

5 km right from Q

15 km Right from R

Since all are straight lines and note that ST = RQ. So, the distance between R and S should be the same as the distance between T and Q.

12 km south from p

5 km right from Q

15 km Right from R

5 km east from S

Since RS = 15 km and  RS = TQ = 15 km Where TQ = TP + PQ => 15 = TP + 12 => TP = 15 − 12 = 3 km

12 km south from p

5 km right from Q

15 km Right from R

5 km east from S

Since P is the starting point of the person and he ends his travelling at point T, he is 3 km away from his starting place.

12 km south from p

5 km right from Q

15 km Right from R

5 km east from S
