Types of Satellite Communication and How Do They Work

Do you know what is ‘Satellite Communication’? How do they work? If no, keep watching till the end.

The transportation of information from one place to another using a communication satellite in orbit around the Earth is called Satellite Communication.

Devices like telephone, radio, television, internet, military applications, etc. all use satellite communications.

There are 2 types of satellite communication:

The communication usually takes place between one or multiple earth stations.

-One way satellite communication

-Two way satellite communication

The information is exchanged between any two earth stations.

– Uplink – Transponders – Downlink

There are 3 stages that explain to us how satellite communications work:

Uplink is a process where the signal from television (for example) from one side of the earth is beamed up to the satellite from the ground station on the earth.

Transponders boost the incoming signal & change their frequency so that the outgoing signals are not altered. Example: Radio receivers, amplifiers and transmitters.

Downlink is the process where these signals are sent to a different location on the earth. It is evident that there is one uplink but multiple downlinks.

Communication happens through 2 types of satellites: - Passive Satellites   - Active Satellites.

They do not amplify the received signals and hence usually the signals are weak.

Passive Satellites

They ensure excellent signal strength and transmit the received signals back to the earth.

Active Satellites

This is how different types of satellite communications work. Help your friends by sharing this content.
