Three Appliances That Function on Fleming’s Left Hand Rule

BY Team Aakash Byju's

If a current-carrying conductor is suspended in a magnetic field, the conductor experiences a mechanical force that moves in the direction of the mechanical force.

Note that the magnetic field and the mechanical force are vector quantities.

Current is a scalar quantity, but it flows in a particular direction at any instant.

The factors on which the magnitude of the force depends: - It is directly proportional to the magnitude of the current.

It is directly proportional to the strength of the magnetic field.

It is directly proportional to the length of the conductor.

It depends on the angle between the direction of current and the direction of the magnetic field. The mechanical force is maximum when the angle is π/2.

Stretch the Forefinger, Middle finger and the thumb of your left hand such that they are mutually perpendicular to each other.

Fleming’s Left-Hand Rule

The forefinger indicates the direction of the magnetic field, the middle finger indicates the direction of the current, and the thumb indicates the direction of motion of the conductor.

The important application of the action of a magnetic field on a current-carrying coil is an electric motor.

The three electrical appliances that use electric motors are an electric fan, washing machine and electric grinder.
