Physics Explained: What’s a Lens Maker Formula? Why Is It Called So?

A transparent medium bounded by two surfaces out of which at least one must be curved is called a Lens.

A lens converges if the focal length is positive and diverges if the focal length is negative.

Focal length is nothing but a distance between the focal point of the lens and the camera’s sensor.

There are two types of lenses. They are: - concave lens  - convex lens

They differ based on the curvature of the two optical surfaces.

Every lens has some specific value. It can be estimated using the lens maker's formula.

Lens maker's formula is the relation between the focal length of a lens to its refractive index and the radii of curvature of two surfaces of the lens.

Lens maker’s formula can be expressed as:

Since this formula is used to manufacture the lenses whose required radii of curvature can be calculated, it is called Lens Maker’s Formula.
