Explained: What Are the Three branches of Optics in physics?

BY Team Aakash Byju's

Optics is a branch of physics that deals with the behaviour and properties of light.

- Geometrical optics - Physical optics - Quantum optics

There are 3 types of Optics:

Optics are useful in the study of the properties of visual, ultraviolet, and infrared light.

Geometrical optics is a type of optics that studies light as a ray.

These optical systems can show how images are formed by tracing the path of different rays.

They are useful in surgeries on human tissues.

Physical optics studies light as a wave.

- Interference - Diffraction - Polarisation of light.

The 3 categories of physical optics are

- Quantum optics studies  light as a particle. - These are used to study  the theory of quantum  mechanics.

Quantum computing and Quantum cryptography are being explored by quantum optics.

These are the 3 types of optics and their uses.
