Chemical Effects Of Electric Current:  Class 8 Notes

Chemical reactions take place when current passes through chemical solutions. The resulting effects are called Chemical effects of current.

Chemical effects in the solution can be noticed depending on the type of the solution which includes:

– Gas bubble production at    electrodes – Metal deposition at     electrodes – Colour changes in the     solution

A conductor is a material that allows an electric current to flow through it.  For example: Copper and Steel.

Bad conductors or insulators are materials that do not allow an electric current to flow freely through them.  For example: Wood

Electrolysis is the decomposition of ionic substances into their constituent elements by a direct electric current.

Electrorefining and Electroplating are a few applications of electrolysis.

The process of electroplating involves applying a negative charge to an object in order to deposit a metal layer.

Electroplating is a very helpful process and some of the advantages are mentioned below:

– Developing a protective     barrier – It lowers friction – Improves adhesion

Few other applications of the chemical effect of electric current are listed below:

– Extracting metals from     their ores. – Purification of metals. – Production of compounds. – Decomposition of       compounds.
