National Sports Day 2022: All About Indian Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand

The history of Indian Sports would be incomplete without remembering Major Dhyan Chand, one of the finest hockey players India ever produced.

Born in an Army family on August 29, 1905, Chand started playing hockey under the supervision of Subedar Major Tiwari, who was himself a sports lover.

His outstanding performance made him the captain of the Indian hockey team in 1927.

Dhyan Chand scored more than 400 goals during his international career between 1926 and 1948.

In the 1936 Berlin Olympic final, his performance is considered as the best hockey performance of all times as he won the game against Germany by 8-1.

With three Olympic gold medals, he became the poster boy of Indian hockey for decades.

He is also proudly known as ‘Wizard Major’ Dhyan Chand for his mastery with the stick and the control over the ball.
