Names and Symbols of s-Block Elements in Periodic Table

BY Team Aakash Byjus

The elements whose valence electrons enter the outermost s-orbital are called ‘s-block elements’.

Groups 1 and 2 in the modern periodic table represent the s-block elements.

The pictorial representation of s-block elements in the periodic table is shown below:

There are 14 s-block elements. The first group has 7 elements out of them, 6 are alkali metals. Let’s see their names and symbols.

Hydrogen (H), Lithium (Li), Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), Rubidium (Rb), Cesium (Cs), Francium (Fr) are some  s-block elements.

Except for hydrogen, other first group elements are alkali metals as they react with water and form alkalies.

The next 7 s-block elements are: Helium (He), Beryllium (Be), Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca), Strontium (Sr), Barium (Ba), and Radium (Ra).

ns(1-2) is the electronic configuration of s-block elements. All the s-block elements are soft metals.

s-block elements are highly electropositive and are good reducing agents.

Their melting and boiling points are low and they give specific colors to the flame.
