Names and Symbols of d Block Elements in Periodic Table

BY Team Aakash Byju's

The elements whose valence electrons enter the outermost d-orbital are called ‘d-block elements’.

Another name for d-block elements is ‘Transition metals’.

In the periodic table, they are placed in between  s-block and p-block elements.

Group 3 to group 12 in the modern periodic table contain d-block elements.

The pictorial representation of d-block elements in the periodic table is shown in the image below:

So, there are a total of 40 d-block elements, 10 elements in each of the 4 rows/series.

Corresponding to the filling up of 3d, 4d, 5d, or 6d orbitals, we have four series in the d block.

3d series - Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn. Their atomic numbers are 21 to 30 respectively.

4d series - Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd. Atomic numbers 39 to 48 in the same order of the symbols written.

5d series - La, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, and Hg. Atomic numbers are 57, and 72 to 80 respectively.

6d series - Ac, Rf, Db, Sg, Bh, Hs, Mt, Ds, Rg, Cn with atomic numbers 89, and 104 to 112 respectively.

Electronic configuration of d-block elements is written as (n-1)d 1-10ns 1-2.
