What Is Trapezoid? Definition and Interesting Facts

Let us know what is a quadrilateral, quadrilateral is a closed figure and a type of polygon with four sides, four vertices and four angles.

Out of many special quadrilaterals, Trapezoid is one among them.

Now let us discuss a Trapezoid, also known as a Trapezium, is also a quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides.

The parallel sides of a trapezium are known as the bases and its non-parallel sides are called legs. A trapezium can also have parallel legs. The parallel sides can be horizontal, vertical or slanting.

The height between parallel sides is called the altitude.

Now let us have a discussion on types of Trapezoids

Right Trapezoid

A pair of right angles makes up a Right Trapezoid.

Isosceles Trapezoid

Like isosceles triangle, Isosceles Trapezoid has equal length of non-parallel sides. In the figure below, sides, AD and BC are equal.

Scalene Trapezoid

In Scalene Trapezoid, none of the sides or angles are equal.

Some of the properties of trapezoids are

– The bases are parallel to each other. – The median is parallel to both the bases and its length will be the average of the length of the bases.

– The angles in a Trapezoid sums up to 360°.

- Sum of adjacent angles in a Trapezoid is equal to 180°.

The formula used to find the area of a Trapezoid is given below

Some real life examples of Trapezoid are a lamp, popcorn box, handbag and so on.

Hope these points cleared your confusion on trapezoids.
