What Is the Use of Greater Than Symbol in Mathematics?

The greater than symbol is a fundamental mathematical symbol that represents the inequality between two values.

The greater than inequality is represented by the symbol " > ".

First understand the greater than symbol. It has two points on the left hand and one point on the right, which may be represented as “>”.

Greater than symbol is used to compare the numbers or quantities.

The alligator or crocodile method is a well-known method to understand the greater than symbol.

We'll assume this is > a crocodile or alligator mouth and the numbers on both sides are the quantity of fish.

Since the crocodile or alligator always wants to eat a large number of fish, the crocodile’s or alligator’s mouth always opens in the direction of the larger quantity of fishes.

The sign's wide open side always points to the larger number, while the small end always points to the smaller number.

For example 15>8, here crocodile’s or alligator’s mouth opens towards 15, which means than 15 is greater than 8.

Example:

Dora has 23 apples and Raju has 31 apples. Find out who has a greater number of apples.
