What Are the Different Parts of a Circle | NCERT Notes Class 6 Maths

The center point of the entire circle. Point C is the center of the circle.

Center

The line segment connecting the centre of circle to any point on the circumference of the circle. r is the radius of the circle.

Radius

A line segment connecting two points on the circle and passing through the centre of the circle. It is twice the radius. d is the diameter of the circle.

Diameter

The line segment connecting two points on the circle but may or may not pass through the centre of the circle. AB is the chord of the circle.

Chord

It is the perimeter of the circle.

Circumference

An arc is the part of circumference. In the figure below, arc APB is minor arc and arc ACB is major arc.

Arc

Sector is an interior region bounded by pair of radii and arc on one side. In the figure here, PBQ is a major sector of the circle and PAQ is a minor sector of the circle

Sector

Segment is an interior region bounded by a chord and an arc.

Segment

A line that intersects a circle at two distinct points is called as the secant of a circle. Here, line PQ is the secant of the circle

Secant of a circle

A line that touches the circle at a single point is known as a tangent to a circle. Line PR is the tangent touching the circle at single point P.
