How to Find the Variance and Standard Deviation

NCERT Maths Class 11

‘Variance’ of a set is the measure of how far the number set is spread out from its average value.

The next step is to find each score’s deviation from the mean.

Square each of the deviated numbers that we found in the previous step and add them all.

Divide this sum of the squares of the deviated numbers by the sample size and it gives the variance of the data set.

‘Standard deviation’ gives the idea of how close the numbers are to the mean.

Assume that the data is more dispersed if the standard deviation is large.

We can calculate the standard deviation by finding the square root of the calculated variance of a given data set.
