6 Properties of Rational Number | CBSE Class 8 Maths Notes

Properties of rational numbers are similar to properties of integers such as:

- Closure Property - Commutative Property - Associative Property - Distributive Property - Identity Property - Inverse Property

Closure property states that for any two rational numbers a and b, a+b is also a rational number.

Rational numbers are closed under addition, subtraction and multiplication but not division because division by zero is not defined.

Commutative Property

It states that the order of rational number in addition and multiplication does not affect the results. While it does in subtraction and division.

Example:

Addition and Multiplication are commutative

Subtraction and Division are not commutative

Associated property states that you can add or multiply numbers regardless of how they are grouped.

Addition and Multiplication are associative for rational numbers.

It states that you can add or multiply numbers regardless of how they are grouped.

Example :

Subtraction and Division are not associative for rational numbers.

It states if a, b and c are three rational numbers

Distributive property

Example:

It holds good in addition and not subtraction.

Identity Property:

0 is an additive identity because when 0 is added to any rational number, we obtain the same. On multiplying 1 to any rational number we get same number, so 1 is a multiplicative identity for rational numbers.

Inverse Property:

Example:
