Math Tricks to Solve Time, Speed and Distance Questions

It is important to understand the relationship between Time, Speed and Distance before we start learning how to solve problems.

‘Speed’ is the measure of distance covered by an object in a unit of time. In other words, it is the ratio of distance to time.

These types of problems are asked in many Quantitative Aptitude exams  like banking, entrance and job interviews.

For better practice some formulae are given here:

Let’s say the speed with which an object is moving at a particular time interval is given.

How would you find the distance of the object that covers that interval of time?

Similarly, if the speed with which an object is moving to cover a given distance, to find the time taken is found using the formula.

It may also be asked to convert the speed given in terms of kilometres per hour to metres per second.

In such cases, multiply the given, speed by 5/18 to convert it into metres per second.

Vice versa: if the speed is given, in terms of metres per second and asked to convert into kilometres per hour then use the following formula,

You may also come across finding ‘Average Speed’.

For eg., if a train covers a certain distance at x km/hr and an equal distance at y km/hr.

Then
