Categorising the living organisms based on similar and different characters is known as ‘Classification’.

Levels of Classification

Domain is the highest rank in the biological classification system. There are three domains of life.

Domain

These include

Domains are divided into kingdoms. Whittaker classified living organisms into five kingdoms.

Kingdom

They are: - Monera - Protista - Plantae - Animalia  - Fungi

Kingdoms are formed based on their mode of nutrition, type of cells and number of cells present in organisms.

Kingdoms are classified into phyla based on the physical features of living organisms.

Phylum

A phylum is further categorised into several classes.

Class

A class is again grouped into orders.

Order

An order is further divided into families. All the organisms in a family share common features.

Family

Genus is the way to express the scientific name of organisms. Fewer organisms are included in each genus.

Genus

It is the lowest level in the classification of living organisms. Species can be defined as a group of organisms which can breed each other.
