How to Calculate the Force of Gravitation Between Two Objects?

The attractive force between two objects with definite masses is known as the ‘force of gravitation’.

It varies directly with the masses, say M₁, M₂ and inversely with the square of distance between two objects, say r.

Let us evaluate an equation with the above information to understand how to calculate the gravitational force between two objects.

where G is called the ‘gravitational constant’ or ‘constant of gravity’.

We know, that F∝M1M2/r2 where F is the gravitational force. This leads to us

The SI unit of gravitational force is Newton.

The value of G is

If you want to see how to find the force of gravitation between two objects, then here it is:

Consider the Earth as one object and find the gravitational force acting on another object of 200 kg at the Earth’s surface.

Mass of earth = 5.98 x 10 kg

Mass of object= 200 kg

Since the object is on the surface of the Earth, the distance between the Earth and the object is the radius of the earth,
