How to Make DIY Solar Eclipse Glasses?

A poster board, a solar filter, blue painter’s tape, scissors, a pen.

Collect Materials

The sunglasses must be certified to protect the eyes against the sun’s UV radiation. The solar filter brands approved by NASA are recommended.

Safety Check

An exposed color film, a medical x-ray film, a smoked glass, CD & floppy discs are some alternate solar filters.

Alternate Solar Filters

Draw an outline for the eyes & nose on a poster board & cut out the frames using scissors or pop out the lenses of an old pair of 3D glasses.

Making Frames

Match the size of the outline drawn with the solar filters so it completely covers the glasses. Any scratches/gaps can be harmful.

Insertion of Solar Filters

Use blue painter’s tape to fix solar filter frames with the poster board and also fix the earpieces in place.

Taping

Go to a dark room & expose the bright light to yourself. If any bright light passes through the prepared eclipse glass, then it is a NO.

Safety Testing

Repeat all the previous steps until the glasses pass the safety testing. The one which passes the safety test is good to go.
