The compounds that contain a carbonyl group (-C=O) are called ‘carbonyl compounds’.
Some of the carbonyl compounds and their applications are listed here.
Aldehydes - Formaldehyde is a carbonyl compound that is used in the manufacture of plastics.
Ketones - They are excellent solvents used in industries. Acetone is used as a nail paint remover and paint thinner.
Methyl butyl ketone and methyl isobutyl ketone are used in the textile industry as solvents in paint.
Carboxylic Acids - Acids we use in many household things such as Vinegar (acetic acid), lemon (citric acid) and spinach (oxalic acid) etc.
Carbamates - They have the capacity to affect the brains and nervous system of many insects, hence they are used as pesticides. For example, Benomyl is used as a fungicide in gardening.
Urea - It act both as fertilizer and feed supplement. They are also used in manufacturing of plastics and drugs.
Butanol is another carbonyl compound that provides fragrance for storing the bread fresh.
